Hubert T. Marshall, II
Hubert T. Marshall, II, 77 years old, a long-time area resident, died on Monday, March 30, 2009 at Vassar Brothers Medical Center in Poughkeepsie. Born on September 30, 1931 in Louisville, Kentucky, he was the son of the late Hubert T. and Fredericka Hetzel Marshall. Hubert was a graduate of Lafayette College in Easton, PA, where he earned his Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering Degree in 1954. He was a veteran of the US Army, serving with the Ordnance Corp. during the Korean War from 1954 - 1956 and attaining the rank of 2nd Lieutenant. He was employed by Texaco in Beacon as a mechanical engineer until his retirement. Hubert was very active in the Fishkill Little League for many years. He is survived by several cousins and dear friends. Professional arrangements are under the direction of the Robert H. Auchmoody Funeral Homes, Inc., 1028 Main Street, Fishkill. A memorial service was held at the funeral home. Interment will be private in Mingo, West Virginia, at a later date. John Joseph "Jack" McKinstry
John Joseph "Jack" McKinstry, 85, of Beacon, died Sunday, March 29, 2009 at Castle Point Medical Center. Mr. McKinstry was the former owner of Ralph's Bar in Beacon. He was a US Army Veteran serving in the 101st Airborne and was a P.O.W. in Germany for 333 days. Born June 7, 1923 in the Bronx, he was the son of the late Mark S. Jr. and Ann McManus McKinstry. Survivors include his wife, Susanna Taylor McKinstry at home; four sons, William Alexander of Middletown; Richard Alexander and his wife, Ruth of Beacon; Gary Alexander and his wife, Dawn of Beacon; and Steven Buchman and his wife, Jennifer of Beacon; a daughter, Christina and her husband, John Galloway of Beacon; three sisters, Agnes and her husband, Richard Russell of Hickory, NC; Helen Robertson of Beacon; Jean Lopes of Danbury, CT; 14 grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a son, John Alphonso McKinstry, brothers, Mark and Robert McKinstry; and sisters, Ann Bonetti and Dorothy Killough. Frank T. Strippel
Frank T. Strippel, 86, of Port Charlotte, FL and formerly of Beacon, NY, died April 5, 2009 at Charlotte Regional Medical Center, Punta Gorda, FL. He was a Test Technician for Texaco Research Facility in Glenham, NY, retiring in 1982. Mr. Strippel was in the United States Army Air Corp during World War II, serving in the Pacific Theatre. He was a former Redman and a member of St. Luke's Episcopal Church in Beacon and St. James Episcopal Church in Port Charlotte, FL. Born May 9, 1922 in Beacon, NY, he was the son of Harold O. and Aline Taylor Strippel. He was married to the late Ruth H. Strippel. Survivors include his sister, Marion A. Mosher of Beacon and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brother, Sgt. Stuart Strippel. Services will be held at 10:00am, Thursday, April 9, 2009 at St. Luke's Episcopal Church, 850 Wolcott Ave., Beacon, with Father Edwin Cromey officiating. Virginia Sedlak
Virginia Sedlak, 86 years old, died Monday, March 30, 2009 at Calvary Hospital in the Bronx. She was born February 19, 1923 in Brooklyn, NY and was the daughter of the late Steven Treccagnoli and Angela D'Alterio DeVivo. She was also the stepdaughter of the late Ferdinando DeVivo. Vicki attended Fordham University. During WWII, she worked for Wright Aeronautical in New Jersey and was the first female engine inspector for B29 Engines. She was employed as a bookkeeper for Mizzi Motors in Manhattan and then for Hutchinson Lawn Mower in Hopewell Junction. She was a communicant of St. Denis Church in Hopewell Junction. She was active in politics and was a member and former Treasurer of the Dutchess County Democratic Party. She was President of the East Fishkill Democratic Club in 1967 and a member of the Democratic Committee from 1969 - 1978. She worked on elections for Hugh Carey, Mario Cuomo, Bella Adzag and Jimmy Carter. Vicki also worked on the campaigns for Congressmen Ottinger and Delaney. She was also a volunteer and fundraiser for the American Heart Association. Vicki was predeceased by her first husband, Tony Masterangelo and her second husband, Andre J. Sedlak, who died May 7, 1997. Vincenza is survived by her beloved sons, Andre Sedlak and his wife, Sharon, of Hopewell Junction and Kevin Paul Sedlak of Amityville LI, NY; a sister, Sylvia Deckert of Deerpark, LI; two grandchildren, Cassandra and Jenna Sedlak; three stepgrandchildren, Zachary, Tyler and Sarah Baysinger; many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by three brothers and two sisters, Anna Bambino, Frank R. DeVivo, Jean Della Universita, Paul R. DeVivo and Albert DeVivo. Francis "Frank" Robert Malarky
Francis "Frank" Robert Malarky, 59, of Newburgh and formerly of Beacon, died April 5, 2009 at St. Luke's Hospital, Newburgh, NY. He was a retired maintenance worker for the New York State Thruway. He was a former member of Protection Engine, Fishkill from 1967-1980. Born December 1, 1949 in New York City, he was the son of the late Walter and Helen Russell Malarky. He was married to the late Sandra P. Haight Malarky. Survivors include daughter, Kimberly D. Malarky of Beacon; grandson, Alexsander McKenzie Tice, brother and sisters-in-law, Sherman, Kelly and Sharon Haight and family; niece, Melissa and her husband, Todd Post and family; and nieces, Amanda and Heather Palmateer and family. Karl E. Uhlitzsch
Karl E. Uhlitzsch, 80, of the Town of Poughkeepsie since 1964, formerly of Old Bridge, NJ, died Monday, March 30, 2009 at home. Mr. Uhlitzsch worked for IBM in E. Fishkill in Purchasing, retiring in 1990 after 25 years of service. He served in the US Army during the Korean War serving with the 424th Field Artillery of the IX Corps in the 8th Army. He was a contributor to his unit's newsletter "The Howitzer" over the years. A loving husband, father and grandfather, he enjoyed traveling and was an avid reader. Born August 28, 1928 in Yonkers, he was the son of the late Erich E. and Charlotte Winkler Uhlitzsch. On November 16, 1957 in St. Alouysis Church, Ridgewood, NY, he married Irene E. Gilertas. Mrs. Uhlitzsch survives at home. Dolores Hope Beaudway Holmes
Dolores Hope Beaudway Holmes, of Cuba, NY, formerly of Beacon, died Saturday, March 21 at home following a lengthy illness. Born October 14, 1934, in Beacon, she was the daughter of Victor and Ethel Marshall Beaudway. She graduated from Beacon High School in 1952, and enlisted in the United States Air Force in 1953, where she met her future husband, Carl Holmes. After discharge from military service, the couple were married in Beacon and then spent their lives doing mission work throughout New York State and in Porta Spain, Trinidad for the Evangelical Alliance Mission. She was a member of the Rawson Baptist Church where her husband served as minister. Surviving in addition to her husband, are three daugthers, Vicky and husband Steve Marbles, Dalton, NY; Cheryl and husband Mike Bachinger, Nunda, NY; Linda and husband Randy Russell, Tucson, AZ; son Carl and wife Sharleen, Cuba, NY; brother, G. Lee Beaudway, Wappingers Falls; sister, Elizabeth Blankenship, Leivasy, WV; and several grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Joseph M. Harvilchuck
Joseph M. Harvilchuck, 67, a 41 year local resident died Tuesday, March 31, 2009 at Vassar Brothers Medical Center. Mr. Harvilchuck was a manager at East Fishkill IBM, retiring in 1997. He was a member of Holy Trinity Church. Mr. Harvilchuck loved to work with his hands, doing carpentry, computer work and playing the piano. He enjoyed classical music and going to musicals. He also loved to travel. Born April 24, 1941 in Scranton, PA, he was the son of the late Michael and Constance Harvilchuck. He attended Key Stone College, Penn State University and received his Doctorates from RPI. On September 7, 1968, in Holy Trinity Church, Poughkeepsie, he married Sandra J. Cavalieri. Mrs. Harvilchuck survives at home. In addition to his wife, he is also survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Julie and Sal Incorvaia of Fort Mill, SC; daughter, Jill Harvilchuck of Middletown; daughter and son-in-law, Susie and Stefan Strom of Sweden; his sister, Ruth Hester of Brackney, PA; grandchildren, Brendon, Collyn and Dylan Incorvaia and Ellie Strom. Dorothy A. Joyce
Dorothy A. Joyce, 98, a lifelong area resident, died Wednesday, April 1, 2009 at her daughter and son-in-law's home in Poughkeepsie. A former City of Poughkeepsie resident, she was a homemaker. Mrs. Joyce enjoyed doing crafts, dancing, and reading. She also liked to play cards and was once active in several bridge clubs. An avid bowler in her younger years, she once bowled in several local leagues. She was proud to be the matriarch of a five-generation family and enjoyed spending time with all of her grandchildren. She was also a great storyteller. She was a member of St. James' Episcopal Church in Hyde Park. Born in Poughkeepsie on July 11, 1910, she was the daughter of the late Edwin Keyes and Katherine Ria Palmer Dusenbury. A 1928 graduate of Arlington High School, she attended the former New Paltz Normal School and graduated from the former Wood Puritan Secretarial School in Poughkeepsie. On June 16, 1930 in St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Poughkeepsie, she married Raymond A. Joyce Sr. He predeceased her on March 12, 1990. She is survived by her son, Raymond A. Joyce Jr. and wife, Barbara, of Clinton; daughter, Joan A. Oetjen and husband, August A. Raymond L. Kurowski
Raymond L. Kurowski, 88, of the Town of Poughkeepsie, died Tuesday, March 31, 2009 at Vassar Brothers Medical Center in Poughkeepsie. Mr. Kurowski worked as a machinist for Medalized Carbon Corp. of Ossining, NY, retiring in 1989. He served in the US Army Air Corp in Europe as a Sergeant, having served with the 412th Thunderbolt Fighter Group of the 9th Air Force. Mr. Kurowski enjoyed bowling and playing golf. As a child, he used to skate on the Hudson River. Over the years, he attended many Squadron Reunions. Born November 29, 1921 in Poughkeepsie, he was the son of Peter and Hedwig Poplowski Kurowski. On May 9, 1942 in St. John the Baptist Church, Poughkeepsie, he married Evelyn M. Bolha. Mrs. Kurowski survives at home. In addition to his wife, he is also survived by his son and daughter-in-law, John L. Kurowski and Holly G. Whitehurst of Rhinebeck; his daughter, Michele A. (Kurowski) Colburn of Rochester; his sister, Wanda Cuchelo of Poughkeepsie; seven grandchildren; 3 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Elizabeth “Betty” L. Mizerak, 87, of the Town of Poughkeepsie died Monday, March 30, 2009 at Vassar Brothers Medical Center. Born in Mauchchunk, PA on February 6, 1922, she was the daughter of Michael and Anna Bohr Figura. On September 14, 1946 in New York City, Betty married Paul Mizerak. Mr. Mizerak predeceased her on January 9, 1992. Betty was a member of St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Poughkeepsie and was a member of the church choir. She loved to sing and play piano, was an avid gardener and loved her family and her cats. She was the loving mother of Roger P. Mizerak and his wife, Laura of Glenford, Robin B. Mizerak and his spouse, George Cole of Kingston and Mark P. Mizerak and his wife, Joanne of Poughkeepsie; and dear grandmother, of Leah Mizerak of Tampa, FL. Jeremy Scott Count, 32 years old, of Wappingers Falls, died suddenly on Wednesday, April 1, 2009 at Vassar Brothers Medical Center. He was born May 1, 1976 in Syracuse, NY, and was the son of Patricia Brown Count of Wappingers Falls and Raymond Count and his wife, Charlene, of Syracuse. Jeremy was a graduate of the New York State School for the Deaf, Class of 1996. His main passion was carpentry, poker and golf. He also enjoyed hunting, but his main love was for his family. He was a wonderful and loving son, brother, uncle and friend and will be greatly missed. Besides his parents, Jeremy is survived by his twin sister, Jessica Carton and her husband, Chris, of Pawling; two sisters, Marisa and Bridget Count, both of Poland, NY; his beloved nephew, Christopher; his maternal grandmother, Dolores Brown of Washingtonville, NY; a girlfriend, Tiffany Rayburn of Florida; several aunts, uncles and cousins. Derrick Christopher Gilliard
Derrick Christopher Gilliard, 38, a lifetime resident of Poughkeepsie, died Monday, March 30, 2009 at Vassar Brothers Medical Center, Poughkeepsie. He had been a case manager for West Help of Greenburgh, NY, St. Francis Hospital and Dutchess County Mental Health Association of Poughkeepsie and Putnam Family Community Services, Putnam Valley, NY. Derrick was a graduate of Poughkeepsie High School and received degrees from Dutchess Community College and SUNY New Paltz. He also was a member of Smith Metropolitan A.M.E. Zion Church of Poughkeepsie. Born February 11, 1971 in Poughkeepsie, he was the son of Richard Gilliard and Clara McNeil Gilliard. Survivors include his loving and devoted parents, Richard Gilliard and Clara McNeil Gilliard at home; longtime companion, Robin Mack of Peekskill, NY; brother, Marvin Gilliard and wife, Shannon of Bowie, MD; sister, Renet Gilliard Dodson and husband, Nathaniel Tyrone of Hyattsville, MD; paternal grandmother, Mary Gilliard of Mount Pleasant, SC; two nieces, Mackenzie Gilliard and Madison Gilliard of Bowie, MD; a host of aunts, uncles, cousins and many friends. James H. Ming
James H. Ming passed away at home on March 31, 2009. He was 66. Born in Greencastle, Indiana; he was the son of James H. and Marian Wolfe Ming. Jim grew up in Appleton, Wisconsin. After graduating from the Lawrenceville School, Lawrenceville, New Jersey, Jim received his B.A. and M.B.A. degrees from the University of Rochester. Capping a forty-one year career in programming and management at IBM, Poughkeepsie, Jim was honored by friends and co-workers on his retirement in September 2008. Surviving are Jim's wife of forty-two years, Lynda and their children, Catherine Ming of Cary, North Carolina and James Ming of Grapevine, Texas. Ruth F. O’Neil
Ruth F. O'Neill, a resident of Williamsburg, Virginia since September of 2005 and former longtime Wappingers Falls resident, entered into rest Thursday, April 2, 2009 at Chambrel of Williamsburg. She was 86. Daughter of the late Clarence and Ethel Schoonmaker Sutton, she was born March 21, 1923 in Newburgh. On April 6, 1947 she married Eugene P. O'Neill at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church in Walden, New York. Mr. O'Neill preceded her in death on May 7, 1986. Mrs. O'Neill was a former member of Zion Episcopal Church, Wappingers Falls where she was active with the Altar Guild, the Sewing Group and the Young Old Timers for many years. Survivors include her daughter, Nancy E. Rogers and her husband, Caulder of Williamsburg, Virginia. In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by three brothers and one sister. James H. Lewis
At nearly the stroke of midnight on April 3, 2009 James H. Lewis died peacefully in his sleep at the Gwinnett Medical Center with many of his family members at his side. He was 59 years old and a longtime time resident of Poughkeepsie, New York. James was born on April 5, 1949 in Springfield, MA, son of the late Joe B. Lewis and surviving mother Helen Lewis. He is also survived by his loving family including his wife Gail Pitcher-Lewis, daughter Tiffany Lewis-Cooper, son Andre Lewis, grandchild Kaela Lewis and son-in-law Devante Cooper. Brother Donald Lewis and sister Lorraine Singleton. He was an avid tennis player. He had excellent card sense and loved playing Bid wiz. He loved to travel and was blessed to able to visit many countries around the world. He had a passion for fishing with his son and spent many days looking to catch that next big Bass. He was quiet and unassuming but steadfast in his beliefs. He was an intelligent man, not quick with words but always thinking, reasoning and making his life decisions with a sound mind. He lived his life faithful to his God Jehovah and proved to be a devoted husband, a loving father and an endearing friend to many. Florence Louise Kiene
Florence Louise Kiene died peacefully at her granddaughter's home in Pennsylvania on Friday, April 3, 2009. She was born in the Bronx on August 5, 1915 to the late Anthony and Louise Ziegler. On March 24, 1940 Florence Louise Christopher married William Henry Kiene, Sr. at St. John's Evangelica Lutheran Church, NYC. They were long time residents of Stormville, NY, married for 58 years when her husband William passed away in 1998. Over the years God blessed Florence and William with 3 children, eleven grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren. After retiring in 1980 from Merrill Lynch Pierce Fenner & Smith Inc, NY, NY, Florence and William moved to Stormville, N.Y. full time. She was a devoted and active member of Our Savior Lutheran Church, Fishkill. Florence is survived by her two sons, William H. Kiene, Jr. of Stormville, NY, Robert and wife Patricia Kiene of Hopewell, NY, and one daughter, Barbara and husband Walter Hatch of Stormville, NY; Grandchildren, Brenda, William III, Lisa, Walter, Karen, Jennifer, Eric, Pamela, Amy, David and Jonathan; Great-Grandchildren, Steven, Kari, Deanna, Michael, Alexis, Molly, Jamie, Rylee and a brand new addition due any day. Dr. Bernell E. Argyle
Dr. Bernell E. Argyle, 78, a 14-year resident of the Town of East Fishkill, formerly of Putnam Valley, died on Saturday, April 4, 2009 at St. Francis Hospital in Poughkeepsie. Born in Elmira, NY on March 20, 1931, he was the son of the late Leroy and Edith Olson Argyle. On February 20, 1954, Bernie married Barbara Bottcher. Bernie and his wife celebrated their 55th anniversary this year. Bernie was a life-long learner, but earned his B.S. from Lehigh University, M.S. from Carnegie Mellon University, and Ph.D. in physical engineering from Yale University. He was employed for 56 years by IBM, although he never considered it work, as a Research Staff Member and remained emeritus until present. He was recognized for his "playing" by earning over 20 patents and published in dozens of professional journals. His love and understanding of science was contagious and thus, was requested to present at conferences around the globe. Bernie was the chairman in 1999 and 2000 for GMAG (Group on Magnetism and its Application), a topical group with the American Physics Society and a member of the IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) Magnetic Society. Even after retirement, Bernie presented at NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization) Peace conferences in Rhodes, Greece (2000) and Oystest, Norway (2003) where the focus was to find paths of promoting world peace through science. Additionally, he was contracted by the University of Maryland to assist in a project for the US Department of Defense. Bernie's love of music was expressed through his trumpet and began at the age of 5. He was the founder of the Lehigh University Dance Band and Dixieland Combo and was most recently a passionate member of the local Jazz Pioneers. He was an ordained Presbyterian Deacon and Elder, but for the past 14 years was a member of the Hopewell Reformed Church in Hopewell Junction where he was very involved in several Christ Care groups, music programs, and the Community Maintenance Program. Bernie's devotion to his family was unprecedented and survivors include his wife Barbara at home; daughters, Jeanne Mack & her husband Charles of Fishkill, Rev. Laurie Preisendanz & her husband Rev. David of Abbington, PA, and Patricia Fisher & her husband Scott of Stormville; his son, Keith Argyle & his wife Lisa of Hopewell Junction; his brother, Richard Argyle of Stanford, NC; and nine grandchildren. Bernie was predeceased by a daughter, Kathy Sue Argyle, in 1958, as well as his sister, Elaine Orndoff. Calling hours will be from 4 to 6 p.m. on Wednesday at the Hopewel l Reformed Church, 143 Beekman Road, Hopewell Junction. A Celebration of Life service will begin at 6 p.m. in the church, followed by a reception in the fellowship hall. All family and friends are invited. Lawrence F. “Russ” Russell
Lawrence F. “Russ” Russell, 85, of Hopewell Junction, passed away on Sunday April 5, 2009 at Wingate at Beacon. Russ was born on March 17, 1924 in Yonkers to Willard and May Williams Russell. On March 23, 1948 he married his high school sweetheart, Estelle “Skip” Lund. Russ became a member of the 91st AFB with the 1st Armored Division and proudly served in World War II. He fought battles in the North Apennines, PO Valley and Rome-Arno. He was awarded the American Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal, European African Middle Eastern Service Medal and World War II Victory Medal. Russ was a route driver for Emmadine Dairy and Ward’s Baking Company. He was a Life Member of Hopewell Hose Co. 1 where he served as Treasurer, Bingo Chairman and Game of Chance Chairman for many years. He was a Charter and Life member of Manny Bacon Post 1758, a Life Member of the Disabled American Veterans at Castle Point and the first Field Chairman of East Fishkill Recreation. He was a lifelong Major League Baseball fan and enjoyed horse racing. Russ is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Estelle. He is also survived by his children and their spouses, Cathy and Walter Womack, Myrtle Beach, SC, Paul and Nancy Russell, Tampa, FL, Linda and Frederick Romig, Hopewell Jct., NY and Evelyn and Robert Ohliger, Hopewell Jct., NY; his grandchildren, who called him “Pop”, Heather and Sacha Botha, Tampa, FL, Jason and Lisa Ohliger, Honesdale, PA, Paul Russell Jr., Ft. Lauderdale, FL, Cathy Russell, Tampa, FL and Jeffrey Ohliger, Allegany, NY; and his great-grandchildren, Avery Ohliger & Kelsie Botha.
He was predeceased by his brothers Kenneth W. Russell and Walden Russell and his sister Priscilla Russell.
