D. Zeke Ezekowitz
D. Zeke Ezekowitz passed away Saturday, June 13, 2009. Born and raised in Brooklyn, NY on February 26, 1952, Zeke was the son of Meyer and Riva Ezekowitz who survived the Holocaust. Mr. Ezekowitz attended Brooklyn Technical High School, continued his education at Polytechnical University and went on to Brooklyn College where he studied pre-law and graduated with a degree in Political Science. While at Brooklyn College, he was a founding father of the Delta Delta chapter of the national fraternity Tau Delta Phi. He received his Juris Doctor from the University of Miami, School of Law and was admitted to the Florida and New York State Bar. His law career began in the Miami Public Defenders Office. Mr. Ezekowitz met his wife Tiffany while both were attending the University of Miami. They were married at Vassar College Chapel in Poughkeepsie, NY, on July 27, 1980. They resided in Florida and later took up residence in NY in 1991. While in Florida Zeke was instrumental in the founding of the City of Weston, Florida. During his lifetime he enjoyed the company of his family and friends in NY and Florida and enjoyed spending the summers at Jersey Shore. Mr. Ezekowitz is survived by his devoted wife, Tiffany; his sons, Asher, Luke and Randy Simon. In addition to his wife and sons, he is survived by his mother-in-law, Lena Cifone; his sister and brother-in-law, Phyllis and Tony Baratta; brother and sister-in-law, Abraham and Vanessa Ezekowitz; his brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Robert and Patricia Cifone. He was uncle to Lisa Kelly, Daniel Goodes, Amanda, Bobby and Joey Cifone, and great uncle to Ruth and Michael Kelly and Sophie Goodes. A gathering for family and friends was held at the Michael Torsone Memorial Funeral Home, 38 Main Street, Highland, NY. Services followed the gathering at the funeral home. Burial took place in Highland Cemetery.
Elizabeth M. Walker
Elizabeth M. “Betty” Walker, 86 of Punta Gorda, FL, passed away Thursday, August 21, 2008, at home, after a short illness. She was born October 17, 1921, in Binghamton, N.Y., to Frank and Bessie M. (nee Ryder) Mulvaney. Betty married Kenneth “Ken” Walker February 28, 1950, with whom she shared the same birthday. Her hobbies included genealogy, bonsai and playing mah jongg. She is survived by her children, many granchildren and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased in death by her husband, Ken; son, Frank; and brothers, Ryder and Francis Mulvaney. A gathering for family and friends will take place at 12:30 p.m. on June 26, 2009 at Fishkill Rural Cemetery, in the DuBois Chapel, 801 Route 9, Fishkill.
Sharon M. Fredericks Pampalone
Sharon M. Fredericks Pampalone, 54 years old, a life long area resident, died Tuesday, June 16, 2009 in Poughkeepsie, NY. She was born June 23, 1954 in Poughkeepsie and was the daughter of Vincent “Jim” Fredericks and the late Jean Mitchell Fredericks. Survived by her father, Jim and his wife “Fanny” of Beacon. Sharon was a graduate of Beacon High School, Class of 1972 and was a proud mother, loving daughter, sister and friend. Besides her father and stepmother, she is survived by a son, Brian T. Pampalone of Beacon; a sister, Sandra Pietragallo and her husband, James, of Fishkill and a nephew, Eric Pietragallo; many aunts, uncles and cousins. Carlos A. Castellanos Nieto
Carlos A. Castellanos Nieto, 73, a Beacon resident for 15 years and formerly of Columbia, died at St. Luke’s Hospital in Newburgh on Tuesday, June 16, 2009. Carlos was born to the late Carlos and Isabel Castellanos Nieto on November 10, 1935 in Bogota, Columbia. He was married to Maria R. Avila Garcia Nieto. Carlos was a member of Tabernacle de Christo, Beacon. He was a former locksmith in Columbia. Carlos was a volunteer at Castle Point VAMC. He formerly attended college for Theology for three years. He loved playing chess. Carlos was a very loving and caring person who liked to help others. He will be missed by all. Survivors include his wife of Queens; five daughters, Flor Nieto of Queens, Nubia Gomez of Beacon, Gladys Sarmiento of Regal Park, Julie Camargo of Pallisades and Christina Castellanos of Columbia; one son, Eduardo Castellanos of Columbia; 15 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. He is also survived by eight brothers and sisters, as well as several nieces and nephews. Carlos was predeceased by a son, Carlos G. Nieto. Julia Eraca Carbonaro, 90, a lifelong Beacon Resident, died June 18, 2009 at Wingate, at Beacon. She was a Retired Dietary Aid at Castle Point VA Medical Center and a member of St. Joachim’s Catholic Church, Beacon. Born May 10, 1919, in Beacon, she was the daughter of the late Frank & Rose Juscik Eraca. Catherine “Dolly” A. Budarf, 83 years old, of Beacon, formerly of Pennsylvania, died on Friday, June 19, 2009 at Wingate Beacon. She was born July 23, 1925 in the Bronx and was the daughter of the late Francis Xavier and Josephine Ruf McCarthy. Dolly had been employed as an operator for New York Telephone Company in NYC until her retirement. She was a communicant of St. Mary Mother of the Church in Fishkill. In her spare time, she enjoyed reading and crafts. She was predeceased by her husband, Daniel M. Budarf who died June 6, 1988. She was also predeceased by her son, Daniel T. Budarf who died April 21, 2007 and her brother, Daniel J. McCarthy who died December 12, 1988. Dolly is survived by her son, Francis Budarf of New Paltz; her sister, Evelyn Baffuto of Beacon and a brother, Francis McCarthy of FL; a daughter-in-law, Linda, of Ozone Park, NY; three grandchildren, Danielle Tomeo and her husband, Brian, Keith Budarf and his wife, Kristin, and Frank Budarf and his wife, Michelle; one great-granddaughter, Juliet Tomeo; and many nieces and nephews. Mildred Jacqueline Cadou, 88 years old of Wappingers Falls, died Friday, June 19 at Vassar Brothers Medical Center in Poughkeepsie. Mildred was born August 22, 1920 and was the daughter of the late Elie and Josephine Perissa Lambert. Mildred worked as an Administrative Specialist at I.B.M. in East Fishkill until her retirement in 1987. She was a member of The Historical Society, the 1920 Club, Magic Birthday Club, Glenham Seniors, and St. Francis Ladies Auxiliary. Mildred is survived by her son, John R. Bridget Parker, 82, a lifetime resident of Poughkeepsie, died June 14, 2009 at Lutheran Care Center. She worked for Western Printing in Poughkeepsie, NY, as a Secretary and previously at Central Hudson in Maintenance. She was a loving mother and devoted grandmother who enjoyed cooking and gardening. Born August 15, 1926, in Poughkeepsie, NY, she was the daughter of Giovanni and Francesca DeNitto Ricco. On January 18, 1946, at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church in Poughkeepsie, she married Charles E. Parker, who predeceased her on July 15, 1981. Robert E. Savoit
Robert E. Savoit, a resident of Wappingers Falls, and a former longtime Beacon resident, died Sunday, June 14, 2009, at Vassar Brothers Medical Center, Poughkeepsie. He was 83. Born in Springfield, Massachusetts on July 4, 1925, he was the son of Peter E. and Mable Gertrude Noonan Savoit. He married the former Helen Knapp. Mrs. Savoit predeceased him on May 25, 2008. He was a World War II veteran, serving in the US Navy. Mr. Savoit retired from the former Texaco Research Center, Glenham, where he was a chemist. He is survived by son, Peter Savoit and his wife, Aura Rosa, Manville, NJ; his daughter, Judith Davies and her husband, Thomas, Wappingers Falls; three sisters, Dorothy McDowell, Norma Ianello, and Claire O'Brien, all of Springfield, MA; four grandchildren, Capri McLucas, and Luis, Jorge, and Jessenia Agular; one great-grandson, Andrew McLucas; and twenty-seven nieces and nephews as well as close friends, Marion Cashin and the William Gilbert family. Christopher Joseph Sillman, only 38 years old died Sunday, June 14, 2009 at Vassar Brothers Medical Center. Chris was born January 22, 1971 and was the son of Donald and Grace Lomonte Sillman who still survive at their home in Fishkill. Christopher worked at the City of Poughkeepsie School District doing maintenance. Chris is also survived by his sister Laura Sillman of Fishkill, NY. Charlotte Storm Dodge
Charlotte Storm Dodge, 95, died peacefully on June 9, 2009 at the Methodist Country Home in Wilmington, DE.
She was born (1913) in Hopewell Junction, NY to Charlotte and William T. Storm, and enjoyed growing up in this very small town of the 1920s and 30s, attending the 3-room schoolhouse and fishing at White Pond. She also loved having her maternal grandparents across the street from her home and her paternal grandparents and relatives living in Stormville. In later years, Charlotte, along with George Bailey, presented a popular narrative of Hopewell Junction life in those early years. Charlotte graduated from Hood College in MD with a Home Economics degree, but spent most of her life as a homemaker, living in Atlanta, GA, Nashville, TN, Wilbraham, MA, and Harrison, NY before returning to Hopewell in 1967. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ernie Dodge, in 1971. During their years together, they enjoyed square dancing, gardening, music, theater and football games. Charlotte was a dedicated hospital volunteer and Girl Scout leader. Charlotte loved life and lived it to the fullest, traveling extensively throughout the U.S., Europe and Asia. She enjoyed all her adventures and the friends she made along the way. She was active in the Hopewell Reformed Church, the Wednesday Club, Hopewell Garden Club, Melzingah Chapter NSDAR, East Fishkill Community Library, East Fishkill Historical Society and the Historical Society of Duchess County. Throughout her life, her quick mind and keen sense of humor made her a favorite with all who knew her. Charlotte is survived by her daughters, Carol (Dan) Welch of Wilmington, DE and Judy (Joel) Gewirtz of Marco Island, FL, sister, Jean Fairley of Southport, NC, and 6 grandchildren, Larry (Carole) Rogers, Anne (Slayt) Lane, John (Dina) Rogers, Jennifer (Barry) Raber, Storm Gewirtz and Matthew Gewirtz. She will also be greatly missed by her 9 great-grandchildren and other loved family members. Agnes Patricia Casey
Agnes Patricia Casey, 85, a lifelong village of Wappingers Falls resident, passed away Tuesday, June 16, 2009 at Vassar Brothers Medical Center in Poughkeepsie. Born March 16, 1924, in Wappingers Falls, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Lucy Greene Salzig. Mrs. Casey was predeceased by her husband, Joseph J. Casey Sr. on February 5, 1992. They were married in Watervliet, N.Y. on October 6, 1945. Agnes was a member of St. Mary’s Church, Wappingers Falls. She enjoyed baking, notably Pizzelles, was an avid Yankee fan and loved her animals, Cuddles, Rosey and Baby. Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, Joseph J. Casey, Jr. and Jean and their daughter, Colleen Oullet and her husband, Todd; a daughter, Anne Marie Casey and her children, Cindy Peck and Donald Peck and his wife, Donna; three great-grandchildren, Kyle, Erin and Ryan Peck; and several cousins. Patricia R. Dockerty
Patricia R. Dockerty, a resident of Albuquerque since 2001 and formerly of Hopewell Junction, passed away at home on June 12, 2009 after a five-month battle against lung cancer. Patricia was born in Suffern, New York on April 23, 1937. She was preceded in death by her parents, Harold Paradies and Ruth Vitarius; by her brother, Richard Paradies; and by her daughter, Allison Marie Kelley. She is survived by her husband, Robert Dockerty; her daughter, Erin Schindler; Erin’s husband, Russell Schindler; and her grandchildren, April and Brendan Schindler. While living in New York, Pat worked as the office manager for several physicians and she was the Credit Manager at the Poughkeepsie Journal newspaper. She was also a credit consultant. Pat founded the Compassionate Friends Chapter in Ridgefield, CT and she was a grief counselor with For the Love of Christie in Austin, TX. Pat was an enthusiastic member of the Albuquerque African Violet Club. She loved cooking and gardening. Pat loved her family, her pets and her many friends. LOVE NEVER DIES. Rose Ann G. Pelletier
Rose Ann G. Pelletier, 65, a life long Poughkeepsie resident, passed away on Wednesday, June 17, 2009 at Vassar Brothers Medical Center in Poughkeepsie after a long illness. Mrs. Pelletier worked as a secretary at IBM in both East Fishkill and Poughkeepsie for nearly twenty years until her retirement. Rose Ann enjoyed going to Bingo and making trips to casinos. She was a communicant of St. Peter’s Church in Hyde Park. Born in Poughkeepsie on February 2, 1944, she was the daughter of the late Anthony R. Germano Sr. and Rose M. Gurdine Germano. She was a graduate of Poughkeepsie High School. On April 29, 1967 in Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church in Poughkeepsie, she married Edward J. Pelletier Jr. Mr Pelletier survives at home. Rose Ann’s family was very important to her. In addition to her husband, she is survived by two brothers, Ronald J. Germano and Anthony R. Germano Jr., both of Poughkeepsie; and many nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by two sisters, Patricia Albrycht and Marie Klein, and a niece, Tara Klein. Margaret “Maggie” Piro, formerly of Larchmont, NY died peacefully June 17, 2009 at Vassar Brothers Medical Center. Maggie had lived with her daughter in Poughkeepsie for the last four years. She is survived by her husband of 53 years, John D. Piro, DDS and four children: Peg Anderson of Poughkeepsie, Christopher Piro of Poughkeepsie, John Piro of South Salem, NY and Timothy Piro of Herndon, Virginia. She is also survived by nine grandchildren; Christopher, Thomas, Gregory, Margaret and Matthew Anderson and Kiera Piro and Kevin, Meredith and Graham Piro. Emil “Jeege” Wakun, 76 years old of Hopewell Junction, died on Sunday, June 14, 2009 at Prince William Hospital in Manassas, VA. He was born January 19, 1933 in New York City and was the son of the late Alex and Sophie Sawczuk Wakun. Jeege was employed by IBM in East Fishkill from 1974 until his retirement in 1991. He was predeceased by his wife, Mariann Serban Wakun who died in December, 2004. Emil was a loving father and grandfather and is survived by one son, Andrew Wakun and his wife, Lisa Spuria, of Manassas, VA; two daughters, Christine Gross and her husband, Frank, of Colorado Springs, CO and Barbara Weglinski and her husband, Peter, of Hyde Park; six grandchildren, Frank, Stephen, Michael, Cheyenne, Cody and Sydney. Gean Elizabeth McLaughlin
Gean Elizabeth McLaughlin, 48, passed away on June 1, 2009. Born on July 26, 1960 in Manhattan, NY, she was a resident of Hopewell Junction from childhood until graduating from John Jay High School in 1978. Gean received a Masters Degree in Elementary Education from Long Beach University, CA. She was a resident of Anaheim, CA, as well as a dedicated and well-respected teacher at Dr. Peter Marshall Elementary School for 13 years. Teaching became her passion, always searching and exploring new methods to maximize the potential of every student, as well as herself. She was a member of the Sierra Club where she enjoyed many challenging and picturesque hikes. Gean was concerned about our environment and did her part to “keep” the world green. She was a gifted but modest artist, enjoying drawing and painting. She is survived by her parents Denis and Margaret McLaughlin; brother, Denis; sisters, Brenda and Suzanne; and many nieces and nephews. Rose L. Hazen, 90, a four-year resident of Hopewell Junction and formerly of Mahopac and the Bronx, died on Thursday, June 18, 2009 at the Wingate at Dutchess. Born in New York City on July 27, 1918, she was the daughter of Ralph and Angela Gaetano Squillante. She was employed by Reader’s Digest in Pleasantville for 10 years until her retirement in 1983. On August 14, 1947 in Manhattan, Rose married Isaac Hazen who predeceased her. She is survived by her children, Adele Harrigan and her husband, Joseph of Poughquag, Michael Hazen and his wife, Joanne of Dobbs Ferry and Barbara Mejias and her husband, Louis of Hopewell Junction; her brother, Neil Squillante and his wife, Jean of New Jersey; six grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Carmela DeCaro, a long time resident of Poughkeepsie, died June 15, 2009 in Apex, NC at the Rex Rehabilitation and Nursing Care Center. She was born on February 1, 1927 to George and Annunziata Gasparro, owners of Gasparro's Bakery in Poughkeepsie. On October 16, 1949, she married Angelo DeCaro, of Verbank, NY, at St. Peter’s Church in Poughkeepsie. He predeceased her in 2003. She is survived by her children and their spouses, Angelo and Angela DeCaro of Austin, TX; Vincent and Beth DeCaro of Apex, NC; Ginny and Michael Mulpeter of Unionville, CT and Nancy Magliocca of LaGrangeville, NY. She is also survived by her 12 grandchildren: Francesca and husband, Lee Romans, Joshua, Danielle and Sophia DeCaro all of Austin, TX; Julianne DeCaro of Beacon, NY; Gabriel and Emma DeCaro of Apex, NC; Kathleen, Patrick and Jimmy Mulpeter of Unionville, CT; Sara and Angelo Vincent Magliocca of LaGrangeville, NY and one great-grandson David Romans of Austin, TX. Carmela was one of eight children. She was predeceased by her siblings, Benjamin, Joseph and John Gasparro, Antoinette Emerson and Catherine Heresniak. She is survived by her brother, Vito and sister-in-law, Margaret Gasparro of Herriman, UT; sister, Mary Caccomo of Beacon, NY; sister-in-law, Rose Orton of Cape Coral, FL; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Felicia and Edwin Northrup of Cortland Manor, NY and sister-in-law, Mary DeCaro of Union, NJ along with many nieces and nephews. She lived most of her adult life in Poughkeepsie and Boca Raton, Fl. During these years, she devoted herself to her family. Her love and support was the foundation of a life filled with many memories of wonderful family gatherings and celebrations. For a short time in Poughkeepsie, she was a volunteer at St. Francis Hospital. In her later years, she enjoyed working with her husband to make special gifts for her grandchildren. In the last few years, she lived in Avon, CT; Poughquag, NY and Cary, NC supported by the love of her children, their spouses and her grandchildren. Professional arrangements have been entrusted to William G. Miller & Son Funeral Home, Inc., 371 Hooker Avenue, Poughkeepsie. A Mass of Christian Burial was offered at Mount Carmel Church, 11 Mount Carmel Place, Poughkeepsie. Gwen McEntegart
Gwen McEntegart, 87 years old, a fifteen year resident of Fishkill, formerly of Somers, NY, died Thursday, June 18, 2009 at Vassar Brothers Hospital. She was born March 12, 1922 in the Bronx and was the daughter of the late Francis and Therese Lehmann McLaughlin. She was a graduate of New York University with a degree in Liberal Arts, Class of 1969. Gwen was devoted to her family. On June 27, 1940, she married Bernard McEntegart, who predeceased her on January 14, 1991. She is survived by three daughters, Patricia Groht and her husband, Addison of Hopewell Junction, Theresa Light and her husband, William of Fishkill and Joan Hardy and her husband, Don of Hudson, FL; two sons, Bernard McEntegart of St. Petersburg, FL and Thomas McEntegart of St. Petersburg, FL; a sister, Marguerite Luper of Houston, TX; twelve grandchildren, Kristin, Jill, Darren, Matthew, Shane, Casey, Melissa, Kitty, Cindy, Tina, Michael and Kelly; five great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her brother, Frank, an infant son, Brian, and a daughter, Marie who died in 1996. The professional arrangements are under the direction of the Robert H. Auchmoody Funeral Homes, Inc., 1028 Main Street, Fishkill. Funeral services took place at the funeral home. Internment will be private. Edward L. Matula
Edward L. Matula, 55, of the Town of Poughkeepsie passed away at home on Friday, June 19, 2009. A 25 year local resident, he had previously resided in the Bronx. He was a self-employed Master Plumber. He was a member of the Bass Masters Club and Holy Trinity Church. Ed was a Stamp and Coin Collector. He loved to fish and went to many Fishing Tournaments. He loved to read Science Fiction and also loved to take long hot baths and watch his big screen TV. Born in Halifax, England on September 16 1953, he was the son of Alex and Sophia Jedzejczyk Matula. He attended Cardinal Hayes High School. On June 11, 1977 at St. Francis Xavier Church, he married Laura Boccia. Mrs. Matula survives her husband, at home in Poughkeepsie. In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Jennifer and Ralph Cline of Kingston; a son, Edward L. Matula, Jr. of Poughkeepsie; a daughter, Heather Matula of Poughkeepsie; a brother, Bobby Matula, his mother and step-father, Sophia and Stanley Nowak of Toms River, NJ and several nieces and nephews.
